Firefighter career advancement offers opportunities for increased responsibility, leadership roles, and specialized assignments within the fire service.

Promotional Opportunities

City of Spokane employees will have the opportunity to promote to higher-ranking positions once they’ve met certain experience requirements. Interested applicants will participate in the promotional process through Civil Service, which may include a written test and an assessment center. 

Fire Equipment Operator

A Fire Equipment Operator (FEO) is a firefighter who primarily drives and operates fire trucks and other emergency vehicles. They are responsible for safely transporting firefighters and equipment to emergencies, including fires and medical calls. Once on the scene, they operate pumps, ladders, and other firefighting tools to support other firefighters.

Lieutenant

A Fire Lieutenant is a first-level supervisor responsible for leading a team of firefighters assigned to a specific apparatus during a designated shift. They ensure their crew follows proper procedures and stays safe while handling fires, medical emergencies, and other incidents.

Captain

A Fire Captain is a mid-level supervisor responsible for managing a fire station and ensuring personnel, equipment, and facilities are prepared for all-risk emergencies, including fires, medical incidents, and rescues. While providing leadership, they also work alongside their crew, actively responding to emergency calls.

Battalion Chief

A Fire Battalion Chief is a senior-level officer responsible for overseeing multiple fire stations, managing emergency operations, and ensuring the efficiency of firefighting and emergency response efforts within their assigned district. They ensure efficient emergency response, enforce department policies, and coordinate resources to maintain public and firefighter safety.

Deputy Fire Chief

A Deputy Fire Chief is a senior officer who assists the Fire Chief and Assistant Chief in managing the fire department’s operations, staff, and resources. They play a key role in strategic planning, policy development, and overseeing large-scale incidents, while ensuring the department functions smoothly and effectively.

Specialties

In addition to promotional paths, firefighter career advancement can include opportunities to serve in specialized roles. These roles may come with additional responsibilities, alternate schedules, and percentage-based pay increases.
