Firefighter career advancement offers opportunities for increased responsibility, leadership roles, and specialized assignments within the fire service.
Promotional Opportunities
City of Spokane employees will have the opportunity to promote to higher-ranking positions once they’ve met certain experience requirements. Interested applicants will participate in the promotional process through Civil Service, which may include a written test and an assessment center.
Fire Equipment Operator
A Fire Equipment Operator (FEO) primarily drives and operates emergency vehicles and equipment. They are responsible for safely transporting firefighters and equipment to emergencies, including fires and medical calls. On scene, the FEO performs general firefighting duties with a focus on operating emergency vehicles and equipment.
Lieutenant
A Fire Lieutenant is a first-level supervisor responsible for leading a team of firefighters assigned to a specific apparatus during a designated shift. They ensure their crew follows proper procedures and stays safe while handling fires, medical emergencies, and other incidents. On scene, the Lieutenant performs general firefighting duties with a focus on leadership and tactical decision making.
Captain
A Fire Captain is a mid-level supervisor responsible for managing a fire station and ensuring personnel, equipment, and facilities are prepared for all-risk emergencies, including fires, medical incidents, and rescues. While providing leadership, they also work alongside their crew, actively responding to emergency calls. On scene, the Captain performs general firefighting duties with a focus on leadership, tactical, and strategic decision making.
Battalion Chief
A Fire Battalion Chief is a senior-level officer responsible for overseeing multiple fire stations, managing emergency operations, and ensuring the efficiency of firefighting and emergency response efforts within their assigned district. They ensure efficient emergency response, enforce department policies, and coordinate resources to maintain public and firefighter safety. On scene, the Battalion Chief is responsible for overall scene control, safety, and emergency operations.
Deputy Fire Chief
A Deputy Fire Chief is a senior officer who assists the Fire Chief and Assistant Chief in managing the fire department’s operations, staff, and resources. They play a key role in strategic planning, policy development, and overseeing large-scale incidents, while ensuring the department functions smoothly and effectively.
Specialties
In addition to promotional paths, firefighter career advancement can include opportunities to serve in specialized roles. These roles may come with additional responsibilities, alternate schedules, and percentage-based pay increases.
Paramedic
Provides advanced emergency medical care on scene and during transport, treating patients with serious injuries or medical conditions.
Water Rescue
Responds to water-related emergencies, performing rescues in rivers, lakes and other bodies of water.
Tech Rescue
Handles complex rescue situations such as confined space, trench, rope, and structural collapse incidents.
Hazmat
Responds to incidents involving dangerous substances to contain, control, and mitigate chemical, biological, or radiological hazards.
Wildland
Fights fires in forested or underdeveloped areas and works to prevent their spread to nearby communities.
Prevention
Focuses on fire safety education, inspections, and code enforcement to reduce fire risk in the community.
Special Investigation
Investigates the origin and cause of fires, including suspicious or criminal incidents.
Training
Develops and conducts training programs to ensure firefighters are prepared for a wide range of emergency situations.
Rescue Task Force
Works alongside law enforcement to provide medical care and rescue operations during active threat situations.
